Like many of you who are stuck to your mobile phone, I recently found myself pulling out my phone a few times thinking I’d received a message when in fact there wasn’t any. Much like ads that I choose to keep blocked rather than unblocked when asked by a webpage, I don’t want my stream of consciousness to be more fragmented than it already is.
Incidentally, this Black Friday and Cyber Monday were torturous as my inbox was drowned with an unending stream of deal after deal after new deal.
Whether my now quasi unconscious and unintended hand-to-pocket-to-face gesticulations are the result of attachment anxiety or ‘ringxiety’ as termed by psychologists, I am beginning to think that something has to change...and that it is time to wake up…at least a little.
This 2-year old article makes reference to research on the matter, made by Brenda Wiederhold, editor-in-chief of the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking who concludes that “rinxiety” also has physical symptoms such as headaches, stress, and sleep disturbances — clearly a result of this new human-to-always-connected device reality and paradigm shift in which we now live.
If that isn’t enough we are about to enter a new world of “Silent Voice First” communication spearheaded by Facebook where we won’t need our vocal cords/voices to transport our thoughts but where are thoughts are picked up by devices that are attached to our bodies — to our skin to be more precise. Yes, this is the dream of Facebook and a dream shared by Regina Dugan in her talk (video) below.
I started saying in this first mental dump… that Facebook is building devices that can communicate with our skin…basically going a few levels above ‘braille’…and I invite you to please watch this space over the coming years. If you hear that Facebook in going into wearables (maybe coming out with a watch of their own…) you’ll know why. They clearly stated in the video below that they want to take advantage of the nerves in the skin (“vibro-tactile sensors in our skin that allow us to interpret complex inputs as language”) to communicate directly to our brains and vice versa. They would have to create wearable tech that can send messages directly to your brain as thoughts…and read messages directly from your thoughts (through a direct direct-brain interface device). And yes… can you imagine speaking to another person without talking? Well they are imagining just that!
CAN YOU FORSEE ANY ISSUES WITH THIS?
Can you imagine receiving Facebook notifications — straight to your brain….as thoughts/messages without having to open the app?
Well its coming and here are the links proving they are working on this. “Amazzinnggg” says Dugan in her April 2017 pitch….well I think we should really be amazed and also very scary amazed!!!
Regina Dugan’s Keynote at Facebook F8 2017 where Silent Voice First is introduced
At the end of the video she asks us to be a little curious and to commit to being terrified.
I say no thanks miss Dugan. I don’t want my thoughts read, my dreams recorded and my emotions downloaded and stored in a cybernetic vault — to then be used to create personality simulations that will be uploaded to robotic humanoid robots - (right???). What will Facebook look like in 2030? How many other companies will they have sucked the creativity out of in order to remain at the forefront of our social lives and what kind of phantom-initiated real symptoms will we have, if we accept to wear machines that affect our thoughts more than they already do?
Are we (getting) ready to start regulating such new technological advancements — AI included? Well we must, and this sooner than we think we must…because AI is moving faster than we could ever have imagined.
The video below is quite the trip too…enjoy!
